Hypocrite’s Row

  “The fat man sprawled on splinters of a chair he’d crushed when he had gone over in this secret room where the elite flaunted Prohibition. Hypocrite's Row. Three red dots painted the front of his nice white shirt. I dropped my fedora on a side table. A tall man who looked like another cop stuck out a hand. I said, “Good to meet you. I’m Nate Moran."

     In the South Florida of the 1920s, Prohibition is a joke. There’s an open coastline just a few hours’ boat ride from the British docks in the Bahamas, and wealthy society swells and tourists will pay handsomely for a drink. The suppliers become folk heroes and the lawman the villain.
Nate Moran’s friend, a federal Prohibition agent, is murdered by a rumrunner who later walks on a technicality. Nate helps bring to justice a high-seas pirate and murderer in Fort Lauderdale and helps bust up a notorious gang of moonshiners, rumrunners, and robbers. He learns a close colleague has gone to the other side. He has a final showdown with that rumrunner who walked. And he must solve a murder in a secret room of a Palm Beach hotel where the rich and entitled can drink: Hypocrite’s Row.

The setting:
South Florida, Prohibition era, 1920s 

Principal characters:
Nate Moran
Charlotte Harper Moran (The Missus): Nate’s wife.
Matt Moran: Nate’s oldest child.
Anna Moran: Nate’s middle child and only daughter.
Zach Moran. Nate’s youngest child.
Dirk Monroe. Nate’s boss and mentor at the Miami Police Department.
Tim Garrison: Head of the FBI’s Miami office.
Bailey Monk: Prohibition agent
Mark Gregg: Rumrunner and killer of Monk and fellow Prohibition agent Fred Paxton
Claude Mosley: Leader of the Mosley criminal gang
Henry Ward: Rumrunner and killer of federal agents on the high seas.
