Truth or Dare
I mentioned in the end notes of my debut novel, Peace River, how I debated with a wide range of people, from scholars to family members, about the structure of historical novels.
I’ve argued that the power of a historical novel is in the reader’s realization that certain amazing events described in the tale actually happened. If the author mixes fact and fiction, and doesn’t discern the two, the reader has no way of knowing which was which, and the power of the true event is heavily diluted -- or lost altogether. That’s why I’m just about the only guy who puts bibliographies in his novels!
Over the next few dispatches, I’ll tell the stories that inspired storylines in Hypocrite’s Row. Many are fascinating, breathtaking, and heartbreaking because they did happen.
