More Backstory
The “Fiesta of the American Tropics” is the actual forerunner to the Orange Bowl Festival.
The Ringling Brothers did move their winter headquarters to Sarasota in 1927.
“Jack’s Crab” is, of course, the legendary Joe’s Stone Crab.
The death of El Gordo is inspired by the 1929 murder of gangster “Fatty” Walsh at the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables.
Pan American Airlines did in fact fly seaplanes to Latin America from its beautiful terminal, later Miami City Hall.
When America took possession of Puerto Rico in the Spanish-American War, it changed the spelling to Porto Rico. Congress would change it back in 1932.
The “-30-" at the end of a Nate Moran adventure is a nod to the old-time practice in which reporters, when they typed up stories, put “XXX” at the bottom to indicate the end. Because “X” is the Roman numeral for ten, the practice later morphed to typing “30.”
