1. What’s the Missus’ real name? (BONUS: Name her hometown.) Charlotte Harper. Grew up in Macon, Ga.
2. What city’s sports team did Bull play for? New York’s pro football team.
3. Where did Nate meet the Missus? She was an accountant at the Royal Palm Hotel, where Nate, then just a Miami police patrolman, came to arrest a pickpocket.
4. From what part of the U.S. did Dirk Monroe’s family come? (BONUS: Why?) New England. Dirk’s mom had tuberculosis, later fatal. Doctors had said the warm weather might help.
5. From what part of the United States did FBI agent Tim Garrison come? The Buffalo area.
6. Where did Bailey Monk grow up? Baltimore
7. Who was El Gordo? (BONUS: Who was El Caballo?) Puerto Rico-born Antonio Paseo, El Gordo (“the fat one”) ran Bolita, the Cuban lottery, as well as bordellos, protection, and murder. He didn’t traffic liquor. His booze supplier was cousin Jose Paseo, El Caballo (“the horse.”)
8. What unusual mode of transportation did the Mosley gang use for moonshine? An airboat, a flat-bottom boat fitted with an airplane propellor.
9. In what state was the company that made the cotter pin that helped Nate solve a mystery? (BONUS: What’s a cotter pin?) North Dakota. A cotter pin holds an airplane propellor in place.
10. What foreign cigarette brand helped Nate bust a killer? Gauloises is an iconic brand of French cigarettes, known for their strong flavor. They were quite popular in the 1920s. I discovered them during a visit to Paris as a young man, and kept the pack as a trinket for years.
