Backstory: The Gulf Stream Pirate
The story of Henry Ward is based on rumrunner and “Gulf Stream Pirate” Horace Alderman.
On Aug. 7, 1927, a U.S. Coast Guard cutter spotted and stopped a ship and found bags of liquor. In seconds the Coast Guard skipper, a Secret Service agent and a machinist were dead, and another man was wounded. Under an obscure maritime law that called for hanging pirates at the first port reached after arrest, Alderman was hanged at the Fort Lauderdale Coast Guard base, now the Bahia Mar Yacht Club. The character of reporter Barry Renault is inspired by Miami Herald police reporter Henry Reno, who did try to sneak into the hanging, but was unsuccessful. Reno was the father of U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno.
