     Backstory: The Mosley Gang

Claude Mosley is inspired by John Ashley, whose gang trafficked in moonshine and rumrunning but also robbed, hijacked, and murdered. Ashley’s brother shotgunned a deputy at the Dade County Jail to try to free John and died in a shootout with Miami city police officer John Riblet, who would become the first in the department to be slain in the line of duty. Ashley brothers Ed and Frank vanished on a run from the Bahamas. Ashley did leave a bullet for Palm Beach County Sheriff Bob Baker. A raid on the Ashley moonshining camp left a deputy and Ashley’s father dead. Ashley and three gang members were stopped on a bridge and “shot escaping.” Decades later, a retired deputy confided the gang members were essentially executed. Mosley girlfriend Lori Ritter is based on Ashley moll Laura Upthegrove.
